Occasional Temporary Markets

Sheffield City Council has the sole and exclusive right to hold markets within an area 6? miles from the nearest City Council operated market. In order to protect these rights the City Council will take all necessary steps, including legal action, against those organisers (and site owners) attempting to hold markets without the City Council's approval.

The City Council has a policy of licensing charitable and fund raising organisations wishing to hold occasional temporary markets including car boot sales. Licenses may also be issued for 'specialist' markets such as antique fairs, exhibitions, record fairs etc. To apply for a licence please complete the following.

Please identify which category of licence you are applying for and refer to guidance notes attached:

(1) Are you a private market operator wishing to hold an occasional specialist market (antiques fair, exhibition, record fair etc.) for commercial or personal gain. YES/NO
  If YES an administration fee of £35.25 (£30 + vat) must accompany this application.
A fee in acknowledgement of the City Council's Market Rights of £2 per stall/table/space per day of the event is payable for which a separate account will be issued.
(2) Are you a charity, sporting, political, social group or school wishing to hold a genuine charitable event where a charge will be made for stalls/space or vehicles at a car boot and where the beneficiary receives all or most of the proceeds YES/NO
  If YES this application will require a fee for administration and acknowledgement of the City Councils Market Rights of £35.25 (£30 + vat) which must accompany this application.
(3) Are you a non 'opt out' school under the control of the local authority wishing to hold occasional temporary markets within the councils market rights criteria, in order to raise funds for the school. YES/NO
  If YES and the criteria have been met for the event to operate under the City Councils Market Rights then no charge will be made. (Details of the criteria can be found on the information sheet or from Sheffield Markets).
If the event is to be held for other purposes then the application should be made as in (2) above.
(4) Are you a charity, sporting, political or social group, or a school wishing to hold a genuine charitable event where no charge is made for stalls/space which are staffed by volunteers and the beneficiary receives all or most of the proceeds. YES/NO
  If YES no fee is payable.

 

 

 

All applications must be made to Sheffield Markets 3 months prior to the proposed event.

The organisers of all occasional temporary markets should:

· Consider traffic problems including access for emergency vehicles and notify the police where appropriate. The organisation will be responsible for any additional police costs.
· Ensure all Health and Safety Legislation is complied with including access to facilities such as toilets.
· Ensure adequate public liability insurance against all claims is in place.
· Be aware that any environmental damage caused which the Authority rectifies will be charged to the organisation.
